Instructions for your upper endoscopy preparation
Having an empty stomach ensures an optimal endoscopic examination of your upper GI tract. Read these instructions carefully to get the best out of your upper endoscopy.
Congratulations on scheduling your upper endoscopy!
This important examination is a significant step in prioritizing your health. Keeping your stomach empty is the key to a safe and successful upper endoscopy. Your commitment to this preparation is commendable and will help ensure a successful procedure.
Here are the instructions:
1. Have a light dinner the night prior to the procedure not later than 8 PM.
2. Do not eat any food (only drink water as needed) after midnight prior to upper endoscopy.
3. Stop drinking water 2 hours prior to upper endoscopy to avoid aspiration pneumonia.
4. If you are on any blood thinner, please discuss that with your prescribing doctor several days prior to upper endoscopy to avoid the risk of bleeding associated with endoscopic interventions.
5. If you are diabetic, please discuss with your prescribing doctor regarding modification of the diabetes medications to avoid low blood sugar.
6. If you are on an injectable weight loss medication, please let the endoscopy team know as those medications will increase the risk of aspiration during the procedure which could damage your lungs.
7. As you are being sedated, you cannot drive yourself back home. Please make sure you arrange for a ride.
